Montessa was likely born in the wild around March 1, 1974 and purchased from Primate Imports in 1975 for captive use in medical testing and breeding. She has had 5 pregnancies and carried 4 babies to full term, being noted as a “good mother.”
When she was separated from her close companion Irma “due to breeding demands,” both chimps became “extremely depressed and nervous.”
